Young, lovely Norwegian Agnes Gerner is waging a dangerous and secret fight. Outwardly, she is a devoted Nazi sympathizer engaged to a prominent businessman. In fact, she is part of an underground resistance doing everything to win the war against the Germans. The only hope she has of being reunited with the man she truly loves—who serves under the code name “Pilgrim”—is if the Nazis are defeated. Of course, there’s no guarantee that she’ll be alive when that happens…

Many years later, three sets of remains are found in a popular Oslo forest—two adults and a child. Despite his boss’s call to not spend extra time on the old case, Detective Tommy Bergmann cannot help but dig deeper, especially as he uncovers connections to a more recent murder. As he unravels the secrets of the past, it becomes clear that everything is permissible in war—and that only those who reject love can come out victorious.

I won the ebook version in a Goodreads Book Giveaway. I know this book got a lot of great reviews and I can understand why. Very well written and translated. From my perspective, it was good but not great. It just wasn't the kind of mystery that I normally enjoy and read. This was a bit too complex for me. Between some of the German names and Swedish names I thought I'd go bonkers . This is a debut novel, and the first in a planned series about the investigative detective, Tommy Bergmann, who is trying to piece together a connection between a murder during the summer of 2003 and a skeletal finding from World War II. It has a delicious twist at the end. I think if Tommy stays in Norway and the novels don't go back and forth in time, it will be a winning series for Nordic crime lovers. There is great promise for this series.

The Last Pilgrim Tommy Bergmann Book 1 eBook Gard Sveen Steven T Murray Reviews

I read a couple chapters and realized I would need to read all 1942 chapters first, then all 2003 chapters in order to make sense of events. Interesting insight into the Norwegian resistance of WW II and how good intentions can go very bad.
not a well written book; struggle to follow at times when it switches from the 1930's/40's to the current century;some of the characters are weak; i would not recommend this book to others; there are better stories out there
I am puzzled 1) That this won awards; 2) That I didn't dislike the flawed protagonist, Bergmann; and 3) That I continued to read the book as it went on and on and *on*. Even with its unjustified length, the constant conjecture about the past actions of the victim, oddly, never quite seemed to fully crystallize and fulfill its appropriate weight and gravitas. The child's death is perhaps somewhat puzzling in terms of motivation, given its immediate aftermath. Basically, this author writes well (he must, as I continually realized that I didn't care who killed whom, until the very end) and devised a nice, satisfying, twist at the conclusion (which draws together some rather unfortunate traits and past actions of Agnes, the woman in the past), but it DESPERATELY (underscored and with exclamation marks) needed a good, old-fashioned editor to streamline and tighten the novel. Several characters and muddled repetition from the middle of the book absolutely should have been consolidated/deleted to earn the book five stars.
Not a particular fan of flipping back and forth in time. Aspects of the story left me confused - the eye gouging, a child's murder, was it love or hate for Agnes to go see someone one last time, the mother son relationship, to mention a few. Although a good detective, he has problems which I would say needed immediate help. As a story it left me disappointed that a traitor and murderer got away with his deception for so long without punishment. Unfortunately war justifies anyone's actions - good or bad.. Would I recommend the book, not really.
The Last Pilgrim is a complex thriller that propels you into the past and just as fast into the present and then back again.

This is a thinking person's novel with lots of noir shadows and lurking suspects.

Tommy Bergmann is a tenacious detective inspector that is relentless in solving the mystery at hand.

I loved this book and am looking forward to the second installment which I have already ordered.

My only suggestion is to keep a list of the characters as they are introduced and their positions to keep questions to a minimum as to their relationship to each other.
I finished this book and had no trouble reading it. Even though I finished it I'm still not sure whether or not I enjoyed it. A positive I was near the end before I had any idea who the killer may be. A negative I still don't totally follow the motive for the killing in question. There were a lot of different characters and, it might have just been me, but I struggled to remember who was who. I'm not sure why that was the case but if there had been a list of at the start I would have been referring back to it even as I neared the end. It was also the type of story where some characters seem to have a position of prominence but ultimately go nowhere and I don't overly like that style. That said, it goes along at a decent enough pace.
I liked the history of the war in Northern Europe, which I knew nothing about since my family was in the Pacific but I got so very tired of people whining about "the child who was killed." The author had no problem brutally killing loving dogs - which bothered me a lot, and which contributed to the developing lack of sympathy I had for the characters and their soppy angst. The story was great, the characters not so much.
